Meet at a park.
Find a place where the children can box bowl on an open grass area. Use empty tissue, food, or shoeboxes and tape on different-colored pieces of paper. Stack and roll the ball to bowl over the boxes. What colors are still standing? Younger children can participate by just taking turns knocking the boxes over. A colorful snack or lunch can be prepared to bring along on this outing.

Sidewalk Chalk (18+ months)

Sheet Art (2+ years)
Materials: Old sheet, spray bottles, water, liquid tempera paint.
Description: Hang the sheet up outside or lay out on the ground. Fill the spray bottles with half water and half tempera paint. Have the children spray on the paint! You’ll have a nice sheet of art. Make sure that the children are supervised so they don’t try to spray each other.
Rainbow Shoe Laces (3+ years)
Materials: A pair of white shoelaces, permanent markers, and a piece of cardboard.
Description: Lay the shoelaces on the piece of cardboard. Have your child draw the lines of rainbows on the laces to make some colorful new laces for their shoes. |
Sock Game (12+ months)
Materials: Empty laundry basket and different colored socks.
Description: Empty a laundry basket and roll up a bunch of socks. Pass out the socks and let the children try to throw them into the basket. Make sure to identify the color of socks they are tossing. You can also count how many throws it takes to get the pair of socks in the basket. Throwing seems to be a fascination for children. Teaching them this game can help to redirect their energy into throwing nicely instead of throwing something out of spite. Aiming and throwing involve gross motor coordination as well.
Matching Game (2+ years)
Materials: 12 paper plates and markers
Description: Mark the plates with colors (write the word “red” on 2 plates, write “orange” on 2 plates, and so on). Let the child use the coinciding marker to color on the plate. Once finished lay the 12 paper plates facing down (picture side down), then let the children take turns trying to match up the color pairs. It’s fun to see your picture revealed when it is turned over! |
