Take a field trip to a farmers market, fruit or vegetable farm, or the grocery store.
Pick fruit and vegetables to take home. Talk about different kinds of fruit and where and how they grow. Have the children try the different types you picked.
Meet at a child-friendly restaurant or pizza place.

Cereal Box Puzzle (3+ years)
Materials: Cereal box, scissors, and a zip lock plastic bag.
Description: Cut out the front of a cereal box. Cut into eight pieces and create a puzzle. Store in a zip lock bag so you don’t lose the pieces. You can do this to more than one box to make it more difficult to piece together if you like. |
Basket Fun (6+ months)
Materials: Towel and laundry basket
Description: fold up a towel at the bottom of the basket. Give the baby a ride in the basket by pushing and pulling the basket away and toward you. Also put toys in the basket for child to take out. This helps in getting baby familiar with a shopping cart.
Play Grocery Store (12+ months)
Materials: Paper bags with handles and empty food boxes or containers
Description: Give each child a paper bag and put the empty food boxes and containers in a pile and let the children pick out items and put them in their bag. You can also pull thethem out and describe to each child what they have bought.
Hot Potato (18+ months)
Materials: Potato or egg and music
Description: Form a circle. Pass a potato or egg around the circle to music. When the music stops, the person holding the potato or egg is out. Pretend the potato or egg is hot so you don’t want to hold it too long.
*For younger children you can replace the potato with a rolled up pair of socks or beanbag. |
Vegetable Tray
Ingredients: A variety of vegetables, and dip if desired
Directions: Wash and cut up an assortment of vegetables, and include some that children may not have tasted before. Allow them to try different kinds.
Fruit Salad
Ingredients: canned peaches, pears, pineapples, apples, bananas, and vanilla yogurt
Directions: cut fruit into bite sizes, combine in a bowl, add yogurt, and mix. Serve in small bowls and enjoy this healthy snack.
Provide appetizers offering a variety of different types of foods for children to try. |
Play-Doh™ Creations (2+ years)
Materials: Play-Doh™ and accessories for making food items.
Descriptions: Use Play-Doh™ and roll out pies, pizza, or cookies. Use rolling pins, pie pans, pizza pans, cookie sheets, and cookie cutters to make these items.
