SKILL #1
PRINT MOTIVATION -- Showing interest in books and knowing that books are fun
• At 2 years old: Make reading time a cozy and special time. Designate a “reading corner” and keep a stack of favorite books nearby.
• At 3 years old: Read with your child only when she shows interest. Look for ways to make reading more fun – selecting books on topics they are interested in or subscribing to a magazine can be great motivators.
• At 4 years old: Encourage your child’s enthusiasm in reading by bringing books with you in the car, to visit friends and to the doctor’s office.
• At 5+ years old: When your child is just beginning to read, look for books that are not too long or too challenging. This helps build confidence in an early reader.
