Parent Tips

Tips For You...

We have a broad range of tips provided by the Oregon Commission on Children & Families. These include expectant mothers and families as well as suggestions for parents of newborns and toddlers. If you have a tip to share, the please let us know.

Please select from the following:

If your child is 2 to 3 years old

WHAT TO EXPECT:
  • Your child will gain increased control over her muscles and will enjoy counting steps, peddling a trike or steering a wheeled toy.

  • Your child's vocabulary will grow rapidly during this year. She may be able to handle instructions involving two or more steps, such as "get the book and put it in your bag, please."

  • He will begin to develop a sense of danger and approach situations with more caution; however, he does not yet have the ability to make decisions such as when to cross the street safely.

  • Your child will have a greater sense of self and may say "NO" in defiance of your requests. She may get easily frustrated and need adults to help her cope with changing moods.

  • Among your child's favorite activities will be unwrapping packages, turning handles and knobs, and opening and closing containers.
If your child is slightly ahead or behind this schedule, there is no cause for concern, but delays should be discussed with your pediatrician or health care provider. Remember to schedule your 3-year well baby check-up.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:
  • Allow your child to ride a tricycle or other wheeled or pedal vehicle. Provide opportunities for climbing, swinging, and hanging by the arms or knees.

  • Use child proof containers for toxic substances, and keep them out of reach of your exploring older toddler.

  • Sing, count, talk, listen and READ, READ, READ, to your child.

  • Remember that supervision at all times is still necessary for your child - his awareness of danger is not yet matched by judgment skills!

  • Have patience - a child of this age can be challenging! Give yourself time for breaks, and talk with other parents for support and advice.
