If you are thinking about having a baby
By being careful before you are pregnant, you can increase the chances that your baby will get off to a healthy start in life.
WHAT TO THINK ABOUT:
- Even before you miss your period and know that you are pregnant, your baby's heart, brain and other vital organs will form.
- What you eat, drink and do before you stop using birth control can affect the health of your baby.
- Men who smoke, drink, or use drugs or who are exposed to chemicals or radiation in the workplace are more likely to father a baby with health problems.
- Knowing your family health history can help you plan for a healthy pregnancy. Certain medical problems are easier to manage if they are well-controlled before pregnancy.
- Taking .4 milligrams of folic acid every day will reduce the risk of certain birth defects of the brain and spine.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
- Consider your age and honestly evaluate your finances and the level of emotional support you will receive from friends and family.
- Get help now if you have violence or abuse in your life; postpone pregnancy until your home environment is safe.
- If you or your partner drink, smoke, or use drugs, find help to stop.
- Maintain a healthy weight by eating a healthy diet and increasing physical activity. If you need nutrition education, call the WIC program in your community at 1 800-SAFENET.
- Make an appointment with your health care provider and dentist to find out how to plan and prepare for a healthy pregnancy. Tell them about anything that may affect the health of your baby.
