Tips For You...
We have a broad range of tips provided by the Oregon Commission on Children & Families. These include expectant mothers and families as well as suggestions for parents of newborns and toddlers. If you have a tip to share, the please let us know.
Please select from the following:
If your child is 18 to 24 months old
WHAT TO EXPECT:
- Your child will gain coordination in walking and climbing. He will enjoy pushing a cart and will try kicking a ball. She will run if given the opportunity.
- Your child will understand and carry out simple instructions, such as "Get the book, please." She will begin to form simple sentences.
- He will begin to solve problems such as finding a favorite toy in the bottom of the toy box.
- Your child likes to accomplish tasks and will glow with pride at a "Good work!" from appreciative adults.
- Among your child's favorite activities will be turning pages, unzipping zippers, taking off socks and shoes, picking up small objects, and taking things apart.
If your child is slightly ahead or behind this schedule, there is no cause for concern, but delays should be discussed with your pediatrician or health care provider. Remember to schedule your 24 month well baby check-up.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
- Provide walking, running, kicking and climbing opportunities both indoors and outdoors. Continue to child proof your home.
- Simple puzzles and toys that can be safely taken apart and put together will fascinate your child. Watch out for small objects (bugs, pins, paper clips) that might easily slip into your toddler's mouth.
- He will particularly enjoy a toy telephone and the conversations you have. Continue to talk, read, sing, and listen to your child.
- Help build your child's confidence and thinking skills, by allowing her time to solve simple problems with your encouragement.
- Give your child simple tasks such as finding a book, getting his jacket, or washing toys so he can be a contributing member of your family.
